Birth cushions for Ugandan women

The “birth cushions”were presented in Washington. They were conceived of by the NGO Doctors with Africa (cuamm) in order to convince the women of Karamoja, a region in North Uganda, to give birth in hospital or at the healthcare centres without being obliged to forfeit their traditions. The birth cushions are a low-tech innovation with a small financial impact: since the women declared that they continued to prefer having their babies at home because in the health facilities they were forced to give birth lying down, Cuamm produced a cushion on which women can give birth in the traditional position. Which moreover, science tells us, is the one that best helps the unborn child to descend.
