The beauty of family

Why dedicate so many pages of the Holy See’s newspaper to names?

Because these names correspond to the faces of the people around the world, who will, from 5 to 19 October, be attending the Extraordinary General Assembly of the Synod of Bishops on the theme: “Pastoral Challenges to the Family in the Context of Evangelization”. The purpose of the meeting is to recommend to the modern world the beauty and values of the family, which derive from the message of Jesus Christ who dispels fear and sustains hope.

Synodus, which means “to travel a path together”, is an expression which indicates an ecclesial place in which to meet in order to reflect — with twofold faithfulness to God and to mankind — in order to confront the challenges facing the family today. The following is a list of the representatives from the five continents, divided as follows: 114 presidents of Bishops’ Conferences, 13 heads of Eastern Catholic Churches sui iuris, 25 heads of the dicasteries of the Roman Curia, nine members of the Ordinary Council for the Secretariat, the Secretary General, the Undersecretary, three religious elected by the Union of Superiors General, 26 members appointed by the Pontiff, eight fraternal delegates, 38 auditors among whom are 13 married couples, and 16 experts. A total of 253 will be participating in the Synod.

In the dynamic of the renewal of the Church sought by Pope Francis, the modernization of the synodal institution is to be carried out particularly in its preparatory process, and during the assembly itself. This project, which initiated on convening the Assembly of the Synod, is being developed with concrete actions in a new or renewed manner. The renewal process will first paint the picture and then frame it. The regulations in force are the tracks on which the train of renewal will run. Moving forward as the necessary steps are taken to amend the norms or, if need be, to implement an outright restructuring of the synodal organ.

The programme of the upcoming Synod will take place in two stages: the Extraordinary General Assembly of 2014 and the Ordinary General Assembly of 2015. The internal operation will follow a new methodology which will ensure that the work is more dynamic and participatory, with interventions and testimony; also taking into account the need for continuity, it will favour developments the second stage, after which the synodal document will be published.
