​A Bavarian celebration for Benedict XVI

On Monday afternoon, 17 April, the day after his 90th birthday, Pope emeritus Benedict XVI had a family gathering, celebrated the Bavarian way at the Mater Ecclesiae monastery in the Vatican Gardens. To celebrated with Benedict XVI was his brother, Msgr Georg Ratzinger; Archbishop Georg Gänswein, the Memores Domini who assist the Pope emeritus and Birgit Wansing. To bring him best wishes, gifts and also flavours from his homeland, including beer and the traditional Pretzel, were the Prime Minister of Bavaria, Horst Seehofer, head of a delegation of the German state, and a traditional Bavarian music company, dressed in traditional costumes. At the conclusion of the meeting, before imparting his blessing to all those present, Benedict XVI had words of gratitude: “Thank you for letting me return to my beautiful homeland”.
