It is enough for a man to pronounce the word “talaq” three times in front of his wife to obtain a legal and immediate divorce, according to an interpretation of Islamic law which in many Muslim countries is not accepted but is in India. After years of battles, the Muslim Indian women’s associations have managed to present a petition to the Supreme Court of India to put an end to this practice. It is now up to the Supreme Court of Delhi, which might even declare the practice unconstitutional, to pronounce its decision.
