A man of discernment

· Carlo Maria Martini Foundation presented to Pope ·

Pope Francis remembered Cardinal Carlo Maria Martini with gratitude and esteem, emphasizing his prophetic charism and calling him a man of discernment and peace. This took place Friday morning 30 August, in a meeting the Pope held with representatives of the Carlo Maria Martini Foundation. It was the first anniversary of the the Cardinal’s death. The foundation, an initiative of the Italian Province of the Society of Jesus in collaboration with the Archdiocese of Milan, aims to promote an understanding and study of the Cardinal's life and works, in order to keep his spirit alive.

During the meeting Pope Francis spoke especially about Cardinal Martini's role in the 32nd General Congregation in 1974 and how he examined the relationship between faith and justice in depth. The Cardinal focused on justice, fostering union within the Society itself and relations between the the Jesuits and the Vatican, in accordance with the Gospel.

The foundation is based in Milan and operates throughout Italy. It commits itself to specific guidelines: to creating an archive of the Cardinal's writings and speeches, promoting their study and publication; to support and foster ecumenical dialogue among different religions, within civil societies and with non-believers, combined with strengthening the relationship between faith, justice and culture; to promote the study of Sacred Scripture; to contribute to formation and pastoral projects which enhance Ignatian pedagogy; to deepen and spread the practice of the spiritual exercises. Presided over by Carlo Casalone, the Provincial of Italy, the foundation also desires — on the website — to provide the oppotunity for people to give their testimonies of the Cardinal. It is also committed to promoting initiatives concerning Cardinal Martini in Italy and abroad.
