A man like yourselves

· Paul VI's address to the United Nations quoted by Pope Francis at the Vigil on Saturday evening ·

On 4 October 1965 Paul VI travelled to New York for the General Assembly of the United Nations to speak to the world's representatives. The Holy Father went on behalf of the Council which was in the final period of its work. This historic address was quoted by Pope Francis during the evening vigil on 7 September which concluded the day of prayer and fasting for peace in Syria and in the world. Francis said, “Let the words of Pope Paul VI resound again: 'No more one against the other, no more, never! ... war never again, never again war!'”. Apart from Scripture, the words of Montini were the only ones quoted in the meditation of his Successor on Saturday evening in St Peter's Square.
