· Mass at Cofton Park in Birmingham for beatification of Cardinal John Henry Newman ·

On Sunday morning, 19 September, the Holy Father beatified Cardinal John Henry Newman. The Pope took his leave of the Apostolic Nuncio and travelled by helicopter from Wimbledon Park to Birmingham in the Midlands, where he arrived an hour later. He was met at the heliport of Birmingham by Archbishop Bernard Longley of Birmingham and the Mayor, and was driven to Cofton Park at Rednal, not far from the Oratorian Cemetery where Cardinal Newman was buried. The park has a capacity of about 70,000. Archbishop Longley introduced the Liturgy.
